The low-down on Vitamins and Minerals.
Aside from the obvious nutrition requirements we have, our bodies need a good balance of vitamins and minerals to ensure that our bodies are kept strong and healthy. These dietary nutrients are, for the most part, easily obtained provided we have a balanced diet and a healthy eating plan which incorporates a variety of foods from all the
food groups.
In the pages that follow we will explore each of the vitamins and minerals, why they are essential to our bodies, what they are used for and what could happen to us if we don't get enough of one or a combination of them.
VITAMINS
There are two groups: fat soluble and water soluble.
Fat Soluble
As their classification suggests, these vitamins are soluble in fats. These are absorbed through the intestinal tract with the help of lipids (fats). They can accumulate in the body and can, if taken in long term high doses, lead to hypervitaminosis (similar to an overdose) which can lead to several complications.
Water Soluble
These are vitamins that are soluble in water and as such are readily excreted from the body. They are not stored in the body thus a consistent intake is vital. They are also sensitive to heat and are destroyed by cooking (e.g. Vit C).
In addition to the above, there are a further 2 "unofficial" vitamins:
MINERALS (Information will be added in the next few days)
At least 18 minerals are important to human nutrition. Our bodies need these for proper composition of bones and blood and for maintenance of normal cell function. They are classified into two categories (major and minor) depending on how much our body requires.
Major - a requirement of more than 100mg per day.
Minor - a requirement of less than 100mg per day.
As you can see there is a long list of vitamins and minerals that our bodies require to keep it strong and healthy. It is imperative that we consume adequate amounts of each of them to avoid a deficiency and thus one of the many ailments or conditions that can result. Following a healthy eating plan, eating a balanced and varied diet will go a long way.
