The Basic Food Groups.

Nutrients from each of the food groups is an absolute essential requirement for humans. The nutrients absorbed from food contribute to the normal functioning of the body.

We eat a variety of foods every day - these foods are grouped when they share a similar composition and nutritional content Each food group has different nutritional values, but they are all essential for our overall health.

Our body requires a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, enzymes, vitamins and minerals to maintain health and to promote growth. Our body cannot however, produce all these nutrients itself. We therefore need to obtain nutrients from the foods we eat, following a healthy eating plan.

An imbalance in nutrients leads to an array of health issues.

It is essential that we eat a balanced diet - including all groups of food - in order to keep our body healthy.

Groups of food and how much of each group we need are best explained through the healthy eating pyramid. This representation of our daily requirements is well documented and well recognised the world over.

Food pyramid

Essentially, there are 5 basic groups :

* Grains and cereals
* Fruits and vegetables - in the picture, shown seperately
* Proteins (meat/chicken/fish)
* Dairy
* Fats, oils and sweets
