Need new healthy eating recipes or ideas for your eating plan?

If you think you need all new healthy eating recipes simply because you're folling an eating plan, think again. You don't need to scrap your old recipes and cookery books. Almost any recipe can be modified or tweaked to ensure that it fits in with your new way of life.

If following an eating plan is new to you, your best course of action would be to PLAN. Do a menu for the week. You'll already know what you should and shouldn't eat. Write down what you intend to eat for breakfast for the week. Do the same for lunch and supper. Don't forget to plan for your snacks too, using the list of "shoulds" for all meals, of course. Have a look at healthy eating recipes for some ideas.

You know what you have in your grocery cupboard and deep freezer, so write a list of the ingredients you'll need for the rest of the week. white rice, brown rice

This is the first time you'll need to have some self control...you need to make wise decisions! If you're running out of say white rice, you'll need to make a conscious decision to buy BROWN rice.

Write it on your list as "brown rice" so that you re-inforce your decision. The same applies for all the ingredients you need where you would usually buy the "less healthy" option e.g. skinless, boneless chicken rather than chicken with bones in and skin on, etc.

No junk food
A good tip that sounds crazy is to have a snack before you go shopping. That way you aren't hungry when you get there and aren't tempted to buy something convenient to eat on the spot.

It also helps you stick to that list and make wise food purchases. Your self control will come into play here again....you need to be firm with yourself. Don't be tempted to simply buy what you normally do.

You've planned the shopping, NOW SHOP THE PLAN!

The next hurdle is to stick to the healthy eating recipe and the menu. This is quite often where people come unstuck...first by adding extra ingredients and then with the all important portion control. This is not to say you need to starve - YOU DON'T.

What is important is that you get your portion sizes right...its pointless saying "I ate grilled chicken with salad" when what you really ate was half of a full grown chicken with a huge portion of potato salad. How big your portions are is just as important as what you are eating.

Portion

Once you've done this for a few weeks, and are used to the types of healthy eating recipes you use, having a "set" menu each week won't be necessary, you'll instinctively know what you need to buy.

I still recommend making that grocery list though. It will save you from buying things you don't really need or want and it ensure you don't forget anything.
